Bacteriostatic Water vs. Sterile Water: What’s the Difference?

Both bacteriostatic water and sterile water are used to reconstitute lyophilized research peptides, but they are not interchangeable. Choosing the right diluent affects how long a reconstituted vial can be used and how it should be handled. This guide explains the difference — for in-vitro laboratory research only.

Sterile water

Sterile water is simply purified water that has been sterilized to remove microorganisms. It contains no preservatives. Once a vial is opened and a peptide is reconstituted with sterile water, there is nothing to inhibit microbial growth, so the solution is generally intended for single use or very short-term use before disposal.

Bacteriostatic water

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water that also contains a small amount of a preservative — most commonly 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol is “bacteriostatic,” meaning it inhibits the growth of bacteria. This allows a reconstituted vial to be accessed multiple times over a research period without the same rapid contamination risk as plain sterile water.

Which should you use?

For research workflows where a single reconstituted vial will be sampled repeatedly over days or weeks, bacteriostatic water is typically preferred, because the preservative extends the usable window. For a single-use preparation, or where the benzyl alcohol preservative could interfere with a particular assay, sterile water may be more appropriate. Always follow your own protocol and the compatibility requirements of your study.
